Sophia Kim

SOPHIA K. KIM is a Toronto-based multidisciplinary artist whose practice explores the invisible labor of care as a vital social infrastructure. Her work is informed by her background: after serving for 22 years as a police officer in the Korean National Police Agency—specializing in women’s and children’s affairs—she shifted her focus to raising four children within the diaspora. This transition from institutional public safety to domestic care forms the conceptual core of her practice. Working across textile installation, bronze sculpture, and oil painting, Kim investigates themes of resilience and interdependence. By integrating traditional needlework and bronze casting with contemporary 3D scanning technology, she explores the transition from soft, embodied forms to permanent structural weight. Through this process, she materializes the invisible supporting structures of care, framing domestic labor as a fundamental pillar of social resilience. Kim has exhibited her work both locally and internationally. Her recent shows include the XV Florence Biennale in Italy and The Artist Project in Toronto, alongside various exhibitions across Montreal, Oakville, and Toronto. She holds an MFA from OCAD University, which culminated in her thesis, Weaving the Unseen.
